The Students are Revolting (2011 Edition)

USI Student Protest March, Dublin, Wednesday 16th November
Of course a thousand people on a protest march isn't cool. You know what's cool? Twenty-thousand people on a protest march.

Never let it be said that the students of this country are good for nothing, someone has to drink all that Jägermeister after all. It turns out they are pretty good at marching too, as twenty thousand or so showed on the streets of Dublin this afternoon as they gathered to protest over rumoured Education cuts. Just over a year ago a similar march pulled me out onto the streets with my camera, despite the fact that being around so many youfs makes me feel like a slightly creepy uncle at a wedding trying to be down with the hip cats, and so to honour this anniversary I ventured forth once again to capture a flavour of the day.

It was good to see so many people out before the budget has even been announced and it gives me hope that we are in for a winter of discontent, with the people taking to the streets and more to show their anger. Hopefully the Dublin Council of Trade Unions march on November 26th will also draw large crowds, and momentum will build towards a people's movement the size of which we haven't seen in years when the almost-certain-to-be-draconian budget is eventually revealed and the citizenry wake up to the reality of life under the thumb of the IMF.

Also, somebody really, really needs to teach these kids what an apostrophe is for.
